Hydro Jetting vs Drain Snaking: Which One Does Your Drain Need?

plumberatlanta.net

For a single clog in a sink, tub or toilet, a cable snake is usually the right tool and the lower-cost one. Hydro jetting earns its higher price when a main line keeps backing up from grease, sludge or roots, because it scours the pipe walls instead of punching one hole through the blockage. Old or damaged pipe should be checked with a camera before anyone jets it.

What is the difference, in plain terms?

A drain snake, also called an auger or cable machine, feeds a spinning steel cable into the pipe. The cutting head on the end bores through hair, wipes or a packed clog and lets water flow again. Hand augers handle fixture drains; drum machines with heavier cable reach the main line through a cleanout.

A hydro jetter pushes water at very high pressure through a hose with a nozzle that sprays backward and to the sides. The rear jets drive the hose forward while the spray strips grease, scale and fine roots off the inside of the pipe and flushes them downstream. The result is closer to a cleaned pipe than an opened one.

What does each cost in 2026?

HomeGuide's 2026 figures put snaking a kitchen sink at $100 to $220 and a bathroom sink, tub or shower at $100 to $250. Snaking a main line or a clog involving several fixtures runs $175 to $600. Severe main drain cleaning with hydro jetting is $300 to $800 in the same guide, and it notes severe sewer blockages can push jetting to $600 to $1,400. A sewer camera inspection is listed at $125 to $500.

Angi's 2026 data gives hydro jetting an average of $475, with a range of $100 to $2,000, and puts snaking a main sewer line at $100 to $400. Hard-to-reach lines and long runs push the price up. Our Atlanta plumbing cost guide covers what drives a bill beyond the tool itself.

Note the trade-off. If a snake opens your main line for a few hundred dollars but the grease or roots return in months, two or three snaking visits can cost more than one jetting job that clears the walls.

Why does grease matter so much in Atlanta?

The City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management says more than half of sanitary sewer spills in Atlanta are caused by grease. Cooking oil, meat fat, butter, gravy and dairy go down the drain warm and liquid, then cool and harden on the pipe walls. Each layer narrows the pipe until a normal load of dishes is enough to back it up.

A snake can cut through that layer, but the coating around the hole stays and catches the next round of grease. Jetting removes it. Atlanta Watershed's advice is to pour leftover oil into a can, scrape plates into the trash and wipe greasy pans before washing, and not to treat the garbage disposal as a way to get rid of fat. East Point and several other cities in the metro run their own fats, oils and grease programs for the same reason.

When is jetting a bad idea?

High-pressure water is hard on pipe that is already failing. Many metro Atlanta homes have older laterals: about 64 percent of East Point homes and more than half of Decatur's were built before 1980, according to census estimates compiled by Point2Homes. Lines from that era are often clay or cast iron, and a jetter can blow out a cracked section or wash soil into an open joint.

A reputable plumber will run a camera down the line first, or at least after clearing it enough to see. If the video shows a collapsed section, a belly or a major offset, the answer is usually repairing the broken section or a trenchless replacement, not more cleaning. Jetting is commonly used to prepare a sound pipe before it is lined.

Is it one drain or the main line?

The tool depends on where the blockage is, so a little detective work before you call saves time. A clog that affects only one fixture, such as a slow bathroom sink while everything else drains normally, is almost always in that fixture's branch line. A hand auger or a small cable machine is the right first step.

A main-line problem looks different. Water backs up into the lowest drain in the house, often a basement floor drain or a ground-floor shower, when you run water somewhere else. Toilets gurgle when the washing machine drains. Several fixtures slow down at once. In that case the plumber needs to reach the line through an outside cleanout, and that is where the choice between a heavy cable and a jetter actually comes up.

Tell the plumber what you have noticed, which fixtures are affected, and whether the line has been cleared before and how recently. A history of repeat calls is the strongest argument for jetting plus a camera rather than another snaking visit.

Is the backup yours or the utility's?

If several homes on your street are backing up, or sewage is coming out of a manhole, the problem may be in the public main. In the City of Atlanta, sewer spills are reported to ATL 311. In north Fulton, Fulton County lists an after-hours sewer line at 404-612-3061.

If only your house is affected, the blockage is likely in your lateral. Gwinnett County Water Resources says the property owner is responsible for the entire sewer lateral, and Fulton County says owners pay for lateral repairs even inside the public right-of-way. Smyrna advises calling a plumber for the private lateral once the city confirms its main is clear.

What should you ask before approving the work?

  • Where will you access the line: a cleanout, a roof vent or a pulled toilet?
  • Will you camera the line before or after clearing it, and can I keep the video?
  • If you recommend jetting, what condition is the pipe in, and what pressure will you use?
  • Is the price flat or hourly, and what happens if the clog does not clear?
  • Is there a callback period if the line backs up again soon?

Can you snake a drain yourself?

For a fixture drain, a hand auger from a hardware store is a reasonable first try. Go slowly, and stop if the cable binds hard. Rented drum machines for main lines are another matter: the cable can kink, whip or snap, and it is easy to push a clog into a tighter spot or snag a broken joint. Leave jetting to professionals entirely; the equipment works at pressures that can cut skin and damage fittings.

Do not chase a clog with chemical drain openers before a plumber arrives. They rarely clear main-line blockages and leave caustic water in the pipe for whoever opens it next.

How do you keep the drain clear afterward?

Keep grease out of the sink, put only toilet paper in the toilet, and use strainers on tub and shower drains. If roots were the cause, ask how quickly they are likely to return; some homeowners schedule periodic cleaning while saving for a permanent fix. Plant trees well away from the sewer path, which Gwinnett County also recommends.

Frequently asked questions

Is hydro jetting safe for PVC pipe?
Sound PVC generally handles jetting well when the plumber matches pressure and nozzle to the pipe size. The concern is damaged pipe of any material, which is why a camera check comes first.
How often should a main line be jetted?
There is no fixed schedule. A line that stays clear after one cleaning may not need another for years; one with recurring roots or grease may need periodic service until the pipe is repaired or lined.
Will snaking remove tree roots?
A cutting head can shear roots inside the pipe and restore flow, but it leaves the root base and the crack it grew through. Roots usually return, sometimes within months.
