Coweta County seat on I-85
Newnan was incorporated on December 20, 1828 and serves as the seat of Coweta County. Its historic downtown is known for antebellum architecture, and I-85, US 29, US 27 Alternate, GA-34 and GA-16 all pass through, with The Forum at Ashley Park and the Newnan-Coweta County Airport nearby. The city had 42,549 residents in 2020 and is about 34 miles in a straight line from downtown Atlanta, far enough out that it runs on its own utilities rather than any Atlanta-area system.
Local creeks, not the Chattahoochee
Newnan Utilities provides electric, water and wastewater service. Its raw water is pumped from Line Creek, Sandy and Brown Creek and White Oak Creek into reservoirs holding about two billion gallons next to the treatment plant. The utility disinfects with chlorine and chlorine dioxide, not chloramine, and adds fluoride; its report does not give a hardness figure, so test before choosing a softener. Wastewater is treated at the Wahoo Creek and Mineral Springs plants. Power and Water Support is listed at 770-683-5516 at all hours.
Newnan Utilities also publishes guidance on lead and copper pipes and on frozen pipes, and offers a form to request a line inspection. Homes with a Newnan mailing address outside the utility's service area may be on a different provider, so check your bill.
Mostly newer homes
Newnan's housing is young: the median home was built in 2004. About 23% predate 1980, mostly near the historic core, where older drain and supply piping is more likely. In the large share of homes from the 2000s and later, the common calls are first or second water heater replacements, PEX and fitting leaks, fixture valves and clogged drains.
Backflow and permits
Newnan Utilities requires backflow preventers on irrigation systems as well as commercial properties, fire sprinklers, medical offices, car washes and restaurants. Devices must be tested when installed, every year, and whenever moved or repaired, by someone holding current backflow certification. The utility does not do the testing itself; reports go through its online submission system. Inside city limits, the City of Newnan Building Department issues plumbing permits from the second floor of City Hall on LaGrange Street (770-254-2354).
Gas and placing a call
Newnan Utilities does not run a gas system. Atlanta Gas Light owns the pipes and keeps a Newnan regional office, and you buy gas from a marketer. If you smell gas, leave the house, then call 911 and Atlanta Gas Light at 877.427.4321. Compared with Atlanta, almost everything differs here: the water source, the utility, the disinfectant and the permit office. Call the number on this page and you'll be connected with an independent plumber who works in Newnan.
