Rex has not had a town government since 1922, so a plumbing permit comes from Clayton County, and water and sewer come from the Clayton County Water Authority. Plumber Atlanta is a connection line, free for callers, that refers you to independent plumbers. Call the number on this page to be connected with a local plumber in Rex.

Plumbing services in Rex
Around the old mill
Rex is a community in eastern Clayton County, once known as Hollingsworth, that grew up around Rex Mill on Cotton Indian Creek. The mill is on the National Register of Historic Places, and Historic Rex Village sits beside it where Rex Road meets Georgia 42. Rex was chartered as a town in 1912 and gave up the charter ten years later. It is about 13 miles from downtown Atlanta, and ZIP 30273 counts roughly 17,800 residents.
What the houses are like
The median home in Rex dates to 1995, and about one in five was built before 1980. Most of the housing is newer than 1980. The plumbing jobs that come with that profile are predictable: tank water heaters at or past their expected life, polybutylene or early plastic supply lines in some 1980s and early 1990s homes, leaking fill valves and flappers, worn shower cartridges, and main drains slowed by roots in the yard.
One authority for water, sewer and backflow
Clayton County Water Authority serves the whole county, including unincorporated areas such as Rex. Water comes mostly from three local watersheds, Little Cotton Indian Creek, Shoal Creek and Pates Creek, plus the Flint River as a supplement, and CCWA publishes a yearly report on its quality. Call 770-960-5200 for billing or, after hours, for a large leak or a sewer backup on the authority's side.
CCWA's piece of the service line ends at the meter; from there to the house it is the homeowner's. One thing Rex residents do not have to arrange is backflow testing. CCWA installs the devices at customer connections and tests them every year with its own certified staff. The authority's public lead and copper inventory portal lets you look up what your service line is recorded as.
County permits
Because Rex is unincorporated, plumbing permits for repairs, remodels and new construction come from Clayton County Community Development's building permits section in Jonesboro, at 121 South McDonough Street ((770) 477-3569). A plumber replacing a water heater or rerouting a line should pull that county permit.
If you smell gas
Gas in Clayton County is bought from certified marketers and delivered through Atlanta Gas Light's pipes. Leave the house, then call 911 and AGL at 877.427.4321 once you are outside.
Rex and Atlanta compared; placing the call
Atlanta residents rely on the city for water and permits. In Rex, both go to Clayton County agencies, and backflow is handled by the utility rather than a private tester. Call this page's number and describe what is going on. You will be connected with an independent plumber who works in Rex, and cost and scheduling are worked out between you.
