Fayetteville runs its own water and sewer system, but some addresses, including some with a Fayetteville mailing address, get water from the Fayette County Water System instead. Plumber Atlanta is a free referral service that connects callers with independent plumbers. Call the number on this page to be connected with a local plumber in Fayetteville.

Plumbing services in Fayetteville
City water or county water?
The City of Fayetteville Water and Sewer Department serves homes inside its system, while the Fayette County Water System serves parts of Fayetteville and also sells water wholesale to the city. The city points out that a Fayetteville mailing address does not mean a property is inside city limits, and some residents pay the county instead. Your water bill settles it. City water is a blend: deep city wells supply about half, and the rest comes from the county system, which draws from Lakes Kedron, Peachtree, Horton and McIntosh. The city disinfects with chlorine; its report does not give a hardness figure. Its service line inventory is published through Georgia EPD's portal.
Where the city stops
For city customers, the city owns and maintains the main, the line to the meter, the meter and the meter box. The service line from the meter to the house is the customer's, and repairs require a plumber; the city does not locate service-line leaks. That includes a leak on the service line inside the meter box. Sewer works a little differently: if you have a backup, the city asks you to call the Water Department first at 770-460-4660 so it can check whether the blockage is on its side. It will try to clear a service-line blockage, but a plumber may still be needed, and any blockage inside the house is a plumbing call. Wastewater goes to the city treatment plant, which discharges to Whitewater Creek.
The water billing office is at 770-460-4237 on weekdays, and after-hours emergencies go to 770-997-5189. For county customers, Fayette County's cross-connection program requires an annual backflow test by a Certified Backflow Assembly Tester.
The Fayette County seat
Fayetteville is the seat of Fayette County, about 21 miles south of downtown Atlanta, with City Hall on Stonewall Avenue West. It had 18,957 residents in 2020. The median home was built in 1999, and only about 9% predate 1980, so most work involves water heaters, toilets, faucets and leaks in lines that are a couple of decades old rather than failing old pipe.
Permits
Inside city limits, Fayetteville Building & Inspections, operated by SAFEbuilt Georgia, handles plan review, permits and inspections through BS&A Online. Schedule inspections at 770-719-4063; general questions go to 770-719-4067.
Gas, and calling for help
Atlanta Gas Light is the emergency gas operator for Fayette County; marketers sell the gas. If you smell gas, leave the house, then call 911 and Atlanta Gas Light at 877.427.4321. Compared with Atlanta, water may come from either of two systems and part of it from wells. Call the number on this page and you'll be connected with an independent plumber who works in Fayetteville.
